# How do I protect/restrict a letter definition?

When you create a Letter Definition in Cintra iQ, it is automatically set to private, meaning only you can view and use it.

## Protecting a Letter Definition

When you protect a letter definition, it only becomes visible and accessible to individuals with the required permissions within the system.

## Restricting a Letter Definition

Restricting a letter definition allows you to specify exactly who can access that letter. This is more exclusive than protection.

## How do I protect a letter?

1. Go to: Definitions > Letters > **Letter Definitions window**.

2. Select a letter definition. The **Protect** button becomes active.
3. Click the **Protect** button. The **ID** of the user who protected the definition appears in the **Protected By** column. The **Protect** button changes to **Unprotect**.

## How do I restrict a letter?

1. Go to: Definitions > Letters > **Letter Definitions window**.
2. Select a letter definition. The **Restrict** button becomes active.
3. Click the **Restrict** button. The **Access Details for ...** window appears.
4. Check the **Access** checkbox(es) next to the desired users.
5. Click the **OK** button. The **ID** of the user who restricted the definition appears in the **Restrict** by column. And those users who have access will be able to see the **Letter Definition** in their list.
