Ask James

Expenses has a licensed AI feature called Ask James, which lets you query your expense data using natural language, rather than building a report manually every time you need an answer.

With Ask James, you can:

• Ask questions about your expense data in plain English and get an answer straight away.

• Have results displayed as a chart, or download them for further analysis.

• Use pre-built example prompts to get a feel for the kinds of questions you can ask.

Wording matters. Ask James responds most consistently when you phrase similar questions the same way each time. If you get inconsistent results, try rephrasing your question more precisely rather than assuming the data itself is wrong.

Ask James does not currently support saving or favouriting prompts, so you'll need to re-enter a question each time you want to ask it again.

Smart categories

Expenses uses AI to automatically assign categories when a receipt is uploaded or a card transaction is processed. Where no existing merchant mapping exists, AI matching steps in and assigns the most appropriate category, indicated by a sparkle icon ✨ on the claim.
